As the summer ends, your HVAC system will be required to work a lot less. After your HVAC system has helped you cool down during the summer, once the summer has ended, there are some things you need to do to ensure optimal efficiency and improved performance. You may also save some money in the process.

Here are the top five things that you can do with your HVAC system at the end of the summer to prepare it for the winter ahead;

1.  Replace and inspect your air filter.

We made this is the first tape because not only is it really easy to perform, it also has a significant impact on the health and general performance of your HVAC system. If your filter is clean, your HVAC system will perform efficiently, allowing you to avoid excessive energy usage. It is advisable that you replace your filter monthly. To make it easier, select a day you will remember, for instance, the first day of the month. Doing this will allow you to set a reminder for the first day of every month and perform this task without fail. If your filter is a permanent filter, you can also rinse it off on the first day of every month.

2.  Check the heat pumps and exterior air conditioning units.

You need to inspect the surroundings of the outdoor cooling equipment. Ensure that there is no clutter or grass around the base of the unit. Clean off collected dust with a damp towel. At the end of this task, ensure that you have at least two feet of clearance around the outdoor equipment. With that clearance, the outdoor system will work properly without external blockage.

3.  Clear out the air conditioning condensate drain.

You can do this by creating a mixture of three parts bleach and one part water. Pour this mixture down your AC condensate drain. Doing this once a year can help remove and prevent the growth of algae or mold. It will also clear any additional blockage, consequently improving the overall system efficiency.

4.  Inspect return air grills and registers.

You will need to go into every room in your house and inspect each of the registers and return air grills. Performing this task will ensure that they are not blocked or shut. Blocked or shut air grilles and registers will prevent airflow from traveling effectively throughout your home. As a result, your home may not cool as effectively as it should. Remove all plants, rugs, furniture, or other objects that could block the vents. Also ensured that all the vent louvres are open.

5.  Check the cooling system’s drip pan.

Ensure that the drip pan in the cooling unit is not overflown, backed up, or clogged. If you notice any of these, turn off the power so that you can safely inspect the area. You can either wipe away the water with towels or washcloths or suck it all up with a wet vacuum. If you clear the drip pan, the cooling system will work more efficiently
